The bold, intelligent, confident, and highly active breed was initially bred for working purposes. The Lacy is also known as the state dog of Texas. He is known as an all-around worker, with a heart as big as the state itself. The Lacy is a generally healthy breed with a low-maintenance coat, but living with him is more work than the average person can handle. This breed is best suited for working life.
Origin
Blue Lacy breed is a mixture of English shepherd and greyhound was originated from Texas in the late 19th century to round up wild dogs and drive them to the market. The breed was named after the lacy brothers of Texas and was first recognized by the Texas Senate in 2001.
Size
The lacy blue is generally between 17 to 25 inches in height at the shoulder. However, males are a bit larger than females and can weigh up to 35 to 55 pounds, while female lacy blue weighs between 26 to 46 pounds. They come in three different colors; red, yellow, blues are any shade of gray from light sparkling silver to dark charcoal, and Red ranges from light cream to rust. They are tall, robust, speedy, and proud dogs and have sparkling eyes.
Coat
Blue lacy dogs have a short, sleek, and shiny coat. They do shed but not much and require brushing once a week to remove dead fur and debris. The blue lacy’s short skin needs minimal maintenance, but that doesn’t mean they don’t require care. Because of their sleek, soft, and shiny hair, they are easy to take care of. While brushing, make sure their strands are dried to avoid damage.
Temperament
The blue lacy is exceptionally hardworking and dedicated when it comes to working. On farms, they can instinctively take care of stubborn longhorn cattle and jittery hens, according to the LGDR. They will protect their territory and can make great companions. Intelligent, brave, and hardworking, they can get along with everyone from humans to dogs as long as they don’t threaten them or their territory. Due to their intelligence, they can be quickly trained to perform complex tasks.
Care
Blue Lacys are intense, high-energy dogs not recommended for apartment living and novice owners. They will become bored and destructive when left for long periods and respond better to a more skillful owner who can manifest the confidence and leadership these hardworking dogs crave the most. Trim the nails every two to three weeks or as needed. One should clean their ears periodically to avoid any kinds of infections. Also, one must brush their coat once or twice a week for good overall health.
Health
Blue lacy is generally a healthy breed, but they are still prone to common diseases like color dilution alopecia which causes hair and skin problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and other food allergies. However, it is essential to take your pet for a check-up and make sure to ask for a health clearance certificate before you get this bold and brave pet home.
