Bearded Collie
Bearded Collie
The bearded is a medium-sized dog with a long, slender, well-muscled body that combines strength and agility. Despite its small stature, this species is very agile and powerful. If the Beardie is going to be successful as a sheep herding breed, it must maintain its high level of activity for an extended amount of time under all circumstances. There is a thick, woolly undercoat under the dog’s thick, silky outer coat.
Origins
Despite the fact that the Bearded Collie is one of Europe’s oldest dog breeds, the breed’s name has changed over time. The Highland Collie and the Mountain Collie are two more names for this dog breed. Farmers have been breeding and herding these dogs for over decades, making tracking the Bearded Collie’s original lineage challenging to perform. They are supposed to have originated in Scotland in the mid-1500s. However, this is not confirmed yet. A pair of paintings from the 1770s depict shaved, long-haired working dogs, widely regarded as the Bearded Collie’s very first visual representations.
DIMENSIONS
The males usually are 21 to 22 inches tall, whereas females stand in between 20 to 21 inches
WEIGHT
Bearded Collie usually weighs between 45-55 pounds.
COAT
The coat of Bearded Collie is shaggy, straight, and coarse.
Color
Choose from black, blue, brown, or fawn. Many Bearded Collies have a gene mutation as they age, resulting in fading coat colors or creating white or silver spots on their coat.
Lifespan
On an average, the lifespan of a Bearded Collie is 12 to 14 years.
Temperament
One of the most often used descriptors is “vibrant”! The Bearded Collie received its name due to the hair that falls from the dog’s chin and forms a beard on its face.
Beardies working in deep foliage in Scotland would bounce up to check on the sheep and, when confronted with obstinate sheep, would bark and bounce in front of them to entice them to move.
Care
Bearded Collies should be groomed once a week with a bristle or pin brush to retain their beauty. Beardie’s coat will seem shiny and healthy if he is groomed regularly, and this will help him stay twisted and matted. If you come across a tangle or mat, sprinkle it with a detangling spray and then detangle the hair with your fingers. Once the tangle or mat is largely untangled, continue the task by smoothing the hair with a brush.
Health concerns
Bearded Collies are prone to several health problems, which may be a source of worry if you aren’t picky about where you get your dog from. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye disorders, autoimmune hypothyroidism, and Addison’s disease are among the conditions that might occur.
Check your Bearded Collie’s ears once a week to ensure no infections or other concerns. If you notice dirt or debris in your dog’s ears, you should gently remove it using an ear cleaning solution and a clean cotton pad. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your Beardie’s ears are filthy, red, inflamed, or smells suspicious.
