Akbash
Akbash
The Akbash is a rare purebred dog that originates from Turkey. It has some of the best qualities you could ask for in a pet. They are known to be wonderful family pets. They are loyal, intelligent, and alert dogs that make them an effective watchdog.
Origin
The origin of Akbash can be traced about 3000 years back in Turkey. They were bred by a shepherd to herd livestock. The breeders wanted to differentiate the dog from predators, so they used the selective breeding method to develop an all-white coat of Akbash. The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the breed as guardian dogs in 1998.
Size
The Akbash has a shoulder height of 27-34 inches, and their weight ranges from 75-140 pounds. They may be smaller or larger than their average size. The breed has a large head, almond-shaped eyes, floppy ears, a short neck, and a robust body. It has thickly padded feet with large curved toes.
Coat
The Akbash has a thick double coat that is medium in length. They are only white that helps to mix with the flock. There is no other accepted color of this breed. The Akbash sheds its hair moderately.
Temperament
The Akbash is a gentle and kind dog who is protective of its family. It is an independent dog that does not require any supervision to complete the task and needs its own space from time to time. They are not suitable for urban areas as they become aggressive by the lights and noise in the town. They are the happiest when given a job to do in a rural or semi-rural area. They prove to be excellent companion dogs, provided the owners must give time and attention to them. They need a firm trainer who is also sensitive while training them. They become quite strong and agile if they smell something suspicious. They may bark at strangers but do not become aggressive towards them. Early socialization is important for these dogs, especially if they live with other pets in the house.
Care
The Akbash is a strong breed that can take control over any situation if allowed. While they have a low activity level, they still require a long walk daily if not provided with play sessions. A house with a large yard or farm works best for the breed as this allows the dog to exercise and play with themselves, being independent. The Akbash is a breed that does not require much grooming. It has a coat that is naturally non-matting. Brushing is required once a week to keep their coat clean and healthy. Take care of the cleanliness of your pet by brushing their teeth, cleaning their eyes and ears, and bath when necessary.
Health
The average lifespan of the Akbash is 10-11 years. The dog breed is prone to some common health conditions: Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and Bloat. By regular vet visits and health check-ups, you may contribute to give your pet a healthy life. Make sure to get the health clearance when planning to get this breed home.
