Curly Coated Retrievers are among the oldest breeds of retrievers and are super versatile. Curly Coated Retrievers are popular gundogs and peerless swimmers. They can be a proud, wickedly intelligent, and poised breed. They are a pretty agile and playful breed, the tallest breed among the retrievers.
They are very loyal and protective regarding their family and owner. They can be excellent guard dogs due to their highly reliable nature. Only they can be pretty aloof if they sense any stranger or unknown faces.
Origin:
The breed Curly coated Retriever is a game dog that has its origin in England around the time of the 1700s. The exact ancestry or origin is a long-lost case, but its stem is probably from the mix crosses of the English old water dog known as the Irish water spaniel and even a poodle.
Size:
The breed Curly coated Retriever has an average standing height, generally measured from the shoulders ranging from 64 cm to 69 cm, which is roughly 25 inches to 27 inches in males, and 58 cm to 64 cm, approximately 23 inches to 25 inches in females. The Curly Coated Retriever has an average weight of 32 kg to 41 kg (about 80 pounds to 100 pounds) in males and 23 kg to 32 kg (roughly 65 pounds to 85 pounds in the case of females.
Coat:
Curly coated Retrievers are easily recognizable or distinguishable by the amount of fur and tight crisp curls that cover their whole body. They generally have short to mid-length black tight curled fur that lies very close to their skin. They usually do not have an undercoat. The females of this breed can shed a good amount of fur every six months interval. Their dense black curls make their fur waterproof, which is an excellent barrier against briars and icy water.
Temperament:
The Curly coated Retrievers are by nature very intelligent, but they also require a firm and understanding owner who will keep the dog from being in charge. They are simultaneously lively, clever, independent, dominating, trainable, and sensitive. They are very affectionate towards their owners, kids, pets, and strangers.
They have a strong personality that makes them independent; thus, they can tolerate being alone but not for a long time. Like every other pet, they need caregivers as well. They have a powerful tendency to bark and howl if bothered.
Care:
Well, this particular breed is very easy to groom and maintain. These dog breeds, too, have a moderate chance of gaining weight if overfed and if not taken out for regular exercise. Their general health remains moderate throughout their lifespan, and they can easily tolerate extreme climatic conditions, especially icy cold environments.
Health:
Curly coated Retrievers might face health issues in their entire lifespans, such as hip dysplasia, pattern baldness, and eye problems like distichiasis and cataracts. They have an average lifespan of nine to fourteen years and generally remain healthy throughout their lifetime, provided they are appropriately taken care of.
