Braque Du Bourbonnais
Braque Du Bourbonnais
The Braque Du Bourbonnais is a primitive breed that is calm, affectionate, and intelligent. They are known by several other names such as Bourbonnais pointer, Bourbonnais pointing dog, French Pointer, and French Pointing dog. If you are looking for a gun dog with a rustic appearance, consider no further than the Braque Du Bourbonnais.
Origin
Braque Du Bourbonnais’s origin can be traced back to 1598 in the Bourbonnais province in France. They were used for hunting purposes within their native France, and they are also used to track and retrieve. It is one of the oldest short-haired pointing breeds. It got recognition from UKC (United Kennel Club) in 2006 under the gun dog group. The AKC (American Kennel Club) included the breed in their foundation stock service in 2011.
Size
The Braque Du Bourbonnais has a shoulder of 18-23 inches and weighs between 35-55 pounds. They can be smaller or larger than their average size. They are medium-sized dogs with a robust build, pear-shaped head, and rounded skull. They have round, expressive brown eyes, medium flat ears close to the face, and a rectangular body with a naturally short or docked tail.
Coat
The Braque Du Bourbonnais has a short and dense coat with a fine texture all over the body, except the back part, which has coarse and long hair. They are not hypoallergenic, thus not an ideal choice for allergy sufferers. This breed can be seen in colours like brown, white, spotted, and fawn. Their hues may be solid or a mix of these colours with spots all over the body.
Temperament
The Braque Du Bourbonnais is a calm and affectionate breed that also makes an excellent companion dog. They strongly bond with family members and become attached to them, sometimes very closely. They may suffer separation anxiety and become destructive if left alone for long. They love to be around people and do not do well alone. Be careful when you go out with your pup, as this breed loves to hunt and may become passionate while hunting. Their intellect and enthusiasm to please their owners makes them relatively easy to train. They are friendly towards everyone they meet. This breed gets along well with children. They do not bark often and are gentle and quiet dogs.
Care
Braque Du Bourbonnais is a highly energetic dog who requires at least one hour of daily exercise. Lack of exercise may develop behavioral issues in your dog. This breed is not suitable for tiny homes, and they enjoy a large house with a garden or backyard where they can fulfill their hunting instinct. The breed is easy to groom; brushing once a week is enough to make them look good. They are prone to roll in dirt so bathe them when necessary. Maintain their overall hygiene and keep a check on vet appointments.
Health
The Braque Du Bourbonnais has an average lifespan of 13-15 years. They are generally healthy but prone to health conditions such as Hip Dysplasia, Entropion and Ectropion, Pulmonic Stenosis, Ear infections, and bloat. Do ask for the health clearance when you bring this breed home.
