Black and Tan Coonhound
Black and Tan Coonhound
Black and Tan Coonhound is a friendly and versatile companion dog that shines in the field and is a show dog. They are intelligent, loyal, and passionate dogs. They’re great jogging or walking companions. Because of their extraordinary hunting and exercising skills, this proud breed is rarely thought of as a family dog. They have a tremendous sensitive nose and a sweet disposition.
Origin
The black and tan coonhound was originated in the United States of America in the late 1700s. This breed crosses between the Bloodhound and the black and tan Virginia Foxhound. This breed is generally known for its hunting skills. They became famous in 1950 when the American Kennel Club recognized the first coonhound. The black and tan coonhound is more popular than any show pet. Competitive night raccoons and black and tan coonhound hunt together are widespread.
Size
The black and tan coonhound can reach up to 23-27 inches in height and weigh 23-35 kilograms. It has a large black straight body with dark eyes, long folded ears, and scissors bite. They have a short thick coat of coal-black with tan points just above the eyes, on the chest, leg, and thigh area with small black markings on the toes. Their head is well proportioned to the body and has an oval outline. They have strong legs and tail that is carried freely.
Coat
The black and tan coonhound has a dense, short, straight coat. The coat is black and tan with dark pencil-like markings just above the eyes, legs, and muzzle, almost similar to a Rottweiler’s markings. They come in dark black, brown, brindle, and fawn colors. They need to brush once or twice a week and always remember to cut their coat once a month.
Temperament
The black and tan coonhound is calm, gentle, and unobtrusive indoors, provided it is sufficiently trained and exercised. Black and Tan coonhound can adapt to living indoors or outdoors, but they love their humans and lose strength without human companionship. A Black and Tan needs plenty of fellowship, attention, and activity to be happy. If the activity involves some hunting games, it can help improve his confidence and trust. He is also great hiking, jogging, or walking companion. Be aware as the coonhounds can be loud and aggressive sometimes. To avoid this kind of behavior, begin training at an early age. They especially appreciate food rewards.
Care
The black and tan coonhound requires regular brushing and bathing as they carry a musty odor with them all the time. Regular baths can keep the musty smell in check. Also, they need regular trimming of nails, ear cleaning, and tooth brushing to avoid any infections.
Health
The black and tan coonhound is typically a stout breed with very few health problems. Common health issues are hips and elbow dysplasia, cataracts, thyroid issues, and other common allergies. Always make sure to take your pet for a regular vet checkup and ask for a health clearance certificate before you get this gentle dog home.
