Biewer Terrier
Biewer Terrier
Playful, energetic, adorable, intelligent, and fluffy, the Biewer Terrier is a rare purebred created by the breeding of two Yorkshire terriers. They are popular because of their lovable nature; they are great companions and get along with almost everyone, from humans to other dogs. They crave attention and enjoy being the star of the show.
Origin
The Biewer Terrier was originated in the late 1900s in Germany, and this breed lies within the history of the Yorkshire terrier. This breed was born in 1985 when a Yorkie pup belonging to Gertrud and Werner Biewer gave birth to a pair of adorable small puppies whose black and white fur didn’t at all look like a typical Yorkie’s coat. Also known as the German Yorkshire terrier, he made his first public appearance in Germany in 1986. The dogs arrived in the United States of America in 2008, gaining maximum popularity. After a few years, genetic tests showed that they had their genes.
Size
This breed is relatively tiny and loves to play and receive immeasurable amounts of love and attention from its owner. The Biewer Terrier can reach up to 8 inches to 9 inches and weigh 4 to 9 pounds. As for their colors, you’ll find them in three different combinations: white, black, brown, blue, and tan. They often get confused with Yorkie, which has gold heads and black or white fur. This dog breed does not have an undercoat, nor do they shed. They are generally considered hypoallergenic- even though there is no such thing.
Coat
The Biewer Terrier has relatively long coats though you can cut the skins for regular brushing. They are considered hypoallergenic, which means they shed less. Because of their soft and silky coat, they are pretty easy to take care of. The daily brush is required if you consider keeping their coats long. Their long coats might be helpful during the months of winter. While brushing, their hair should be dry, or else they will be damaged.
Temperament
Part of the reason the Biewer terrier makes a good companion is that they get along with almost everyone. Adults, seniors, dogs, cats, and kids, it doesn’t matter your Biewer loves them all. They like to play even when they are at home. They do not tend to bark as they are an easy-going breed. Though they look tiny and adorable, they have a prominent personality, and they’ll jump on your lap if they sense you’re feeling cold. They are generally possessive towards their humans. They don’t care even if you leave them in the house for days.
Care
The Biewer Terrier is a highly active breed that requires daily exercise to work off excess energy. One should trim their nails regularly with a nail clipper, and their ears should be checked periodically to avoid the buildup of wax. Their teeth should also be brushed regularly as they are prone to dental problems.
Health
They are generally healthy, but they share some common health issues, given that they are bred from the Yorkshire terrier. The most common problems are patellar luxation, Porto systematic shunt, and bladder stones. However, it is essential to take your pet for a checkup and make sure to ask for a health clearance certificate before you get this cute pet home.
