Chi Poo
Chi-Poo
Chi-Poo is an affectionate, playful, and adorable breed that combines some of the beautiful traits of its parent breeds, Chihuahua and Poodle. It is a compact dog that is great with kids and makes a wonderful family companion dog. Read on below to learn some more facts about the breed.
Origin
The Chi-Poo results from the crossbreeding of two purebreds, Chihuahua and Poodle. It may have existed naturally over the years, but the intentional mixing of Chihuahua and Poodle started in the United States in the 1970s. Breeders wanted to create a low-maintenance, intelligent dog who is easy to train and independent. Mixing of breeds also minimizes health issues. As it is a mixed breed, it is recognized by ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club) and DDKC (Designer Dogs Kennel Club).
Size
As the Chi-Poo is a mixed breed, the size may vary depending upon the dominant trait of the parent breed. As it is a cross between Chihuahua and Toy Poodle, you can expect the breed to be small in size. It has a shoulder height of 5-15 inches and an average weight of 5-20 pounds. They can be smaller or larger than their standard size.
Coat
Chi-Poo has a mix of its parent breeds, coat, and colors. It is a medium-length coat that is considered a good choice for allergy sufferers. There is long-coated and short-coated Chi-Poo as well. The primary colors of the breed are white, black, brown, silver, grey, fawn, cream, blue, and brindle. Their coats can be solid in color or sometimes may have a blend of colors.
Temperament
You can describe a Chi-poo as a fun-loving, playful, and intelligent dog. Although small, they have a powerhouse of energy and love to follow you everywhere in the house and get involved in your daily routine. While both their parent breeds do not like to be alone, this breed is an anomaly and does fine with working owners who have to leave the house for a longer time. They enjoy watching you and participating in activities like walking, running, and play sessions. It has an independent nature, loyalty, and affection towards its family. The breed is a little wary of strangers, but this can be resolved with early socialization and proper training.
Care
It has high energy requirements and thrives on leashed walks, play sessions, and family activities. It may get bored if its energy requirements are not fulfilled. It is a versatile dog and a good option for apartment living. The breed is relatively easy to groom; brushing twice a week is enough to keep their coat clean and healthy. They are not suitable for extreme weather conditions due to their short coat. Keep up your dog’s regular vet check-ups to detect any health concerns. Trim nails regularly, clean eyes and ears, and brush teeth regularly.
Health
The Chi-Poo has an average lifespan of 12-15 years. It is prone to some health conditions that their parent breeds also face. They suffer from Hypoglycemia, Glaucoma, Patellar Luxation, and overactive tear glands. Get the health clearance before you get this lap dog home.
