Boerboels are intelligent and loyal family companion dogs that are loving and calm, especially towards children. They make excellent guard dogs due to their large and intimidating body structure. It is a large-sized Mastiff dog bred for guarding and working on farms.
Origin
Boerboels, also known by different names such as South African Mastiff dog, South African Boerboel, and Borbull, originates in South Africa. It is farming and guarding dogs bred to protect the homes and work in the farms. Boerboel dog breeding is considered a hobby and an industry in South Africa. These dogs are exported from South Africa to different parts of the world.
Size
The male Boerboel has a shoulder height of 25-28 inches, whereas; a female Boerboel has a shoulder height of 23-26 inches. They weigh around 150-180 pounds, and their weight can also go up to 200 pounds. It has a muscular body, flat back, brown eyes, and v-shaped ears. Their big head and filled-out face are considered as their distinct feature.
Coat
Boerboels have a short and dense coat that can be seen in various colours like brown, yellow, red, fawn, black, or brindle with white markings on the neck, chest, head, and legs. The breed is an average shedder, and many dogs have dark markings around their eyes, mouths, and noses.
Temperament
Boerboels are easy-going, playful, and intelligent dogs eager to please. They become the happiest when given a task, whether farm work, guard duty, or daily family tasks. They love to do jobs to show off their agility and strength. They are protective of their people, especially children. They tend to become overprotective and aggressive if they are not socialized at a young age. Exposure to the surroundings and people is essential to turn your pup into a well-behaved dog. The breed is not suitable for novice owners as patience and consistency are required while training them. They need plenty of mental stimulation, without which they can get bored and become aggressive. They do best at homes with a backyard and a fence where they get plenty of space to roam around.
Care
Boerboels are working dogs, so they require a lot of exercises to stay healthy and mentally stimulated. Take them for a walk twice a day for 15-20 minutes to keep them happy and healthy. Beyond training, take care of their cleanliness, trim nails regularly, clean eyes and ears to prevent infection. The breed requires brushing once a week to keep its coat clean and healthy. Take your pet for regular vet check-ups to detect the early signs of diseases, if any. Maintain the record of the vaccination and do not miss any. Maintain the overall hygiene of your pet.
Health
The Boerboels have a lifespan of 10-12 years. They are prone to health conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, ear infections, eye problems, heart problems, and bloat. If you notice signs of any of these conditions, consult a vet immediately. Ensure the health clearance when you plan to get the breed home.
