Black Mouth Cur
Black Mouth Cur
The Black Mouth Cur is a fearless, energetic, and hardworking dog breed. It is an all-around working breed perfect for families with an active lifestyle. The species also has a sensitive side that does not respond well to harsh and hostile approaches.
Origin
The Black Mouth Cur has its origin from south-east cities of the United States, most likely Mississippi or Tennessee. It is believed that these dogs were brought to North America by farmers and settlers who farmed the land from Florida to Texas. The breed was used to herd livestock, hunt in the area’s rugged terrain, and protect the home from wild animals. Though the American Kennel Club does not recognize the breed, the United Kennel Club has recognized the breed in 1998.
Size
The Black Mouth Cur has an average shoulder height of 16-25 inches. The breed can vary in size depending upon the breeding; moreover, dogs within the same litter can vary in size. The male breed tends to be larger and weighs around 40-95 pounds, whereas a female weigh about 35-80 pounds. The breed is slightly longer than tall with a broad chest, straight and long legs, and webbed feet.
Coat
The Black Mouth Cur has a short and straight coat in various yellow, fawn, and brindle shades. They can be seen in different coat colors like brown, black, fawn, Isabella, and brindle. Some Cur dogs have a heavier coat, while others within the same litter may have lighter coats.
Temperament
The Black Mouth Cur is an intelligent, playful, and hardworking breed. They are fearless and never back out from a fight, including wild cats and other animals. They are sensitive and quite protective of children in the family. They are natural hunters and have a high prey drive, so they are not suitable for homes with cats and other small animals. Please don’t leave them alone for a longer time as they are pretty good at escaping. They can be stubborn while training, but at the same time, they do not respond to over harsh approaches due to their sensitive nature. They are eager to please their owner but get bored if the training sessions are too long. Short and focused training sessions work best for the breed. Early socialization and training are essential for your pup to become a well-rounded dog.
Care
The Black Mouth Cur is a hunting dog and requires a great deal of exercise to stay physically fit and mentally stimulated throughout the day.
They need plenty of space to roam around and daily walk. They make great jogging companions and are not suitable for apartment living. It’s essential to take proper care of the breed as they trap dirt quite quickly, leading to various infections. Brushing once a week is enough to keep their coat healthy. Make sure to take your dog for regular vet check-ups.
Health
The Black Mouth Cur has a lifespan of 12-15 years. It is generally healthy, but like every other breed, it too has some health problems. Hip Dysplasia, Cataracts, Epilepsy, Ear infections, and Mange are some of the health issues found in a Black Mouth Cur. Do ask for the health clearance when you get the breed home.
